The bones of Paris

“Fans of Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris will feel right at home in the Jazz Age Paris setting. . . . Beyond the cameos and the bohemian atmosphere, there is a compelling thriller here and some fascinating fictional characters to go with the real-life ones. As always with King, the plot is tricky but marvelously constructed, delivering twists that not only surprise but also deepen the story and its multiple levels of meaning. Break out that dusty bottle of absinthe you have stored away and settle in for a treat.”Booklist     --amazon--

The October list
"Might well be Deaver's most fiendish thriller ever...as the pace quickens and the story continues to backtrack, solid evidence, established plot points and sturdily built characters all begin to come undone, until what started out as an interactive game becomes a truly unnerving exercise in deception." (New York Times Book Review)

Something borrowed, someone dead

..The plot is fairly predictable: a newcomer to a tiny village with a bad habit of “borrowing” others’ belongings is found poisoned after drinking some pilfered wine. Agatha moves from pub to vicar’s house to manor house, questioning everyone in sight. Although this is set in today’s world, it seems very much like the world of the early twentieth century. Beaton’s Agatha Raisin series is extremely popular  and, often, good fun. This one seems like a too-calculated cozy...    --amazon--

Amour

AMOUR is one of those films that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. The plot is straightforward: an elderly man looks after his wife after a stroke and finds that he just cannot cope. ... Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) decides at the end of her life to check out; her husband (Jean-Louis Tritingnant, in a memorable performance) tries in vain to keep her alive. For anyone who had had the experience of being a carer, the film has painful resonances. Director Michael Haneke's filming is just brilliant; ... The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival; it is easily the best I've seen in 2012.  --Amazon--

Killing season

Killing Season is a movie that thrills and leaves you thinking. It is timely because the tension echoes many of the current situations going on in society. In their own right each of the two in the movie have their reasons (and justifications) for their points and places. In the end (sorry, no spoiler here) the stark realization of the view from the other side really brings home the powerful moral of this movie. De Niro is his usual amazing self and Travolta delivers a nearly convincing eastern bloc persona. Well worth seeing.  --Amazon--

They were joined by many other families and eventually caught, but were able to escape before being sent away for good. They then found another cave which had never been discovered, and it had its own water supply to help decrease any need to leave shelter. The women and children lived in the cave for nearly a year and a half, which is the longest recorded uninterrupted underground survival period. The men would leave their hiding place only to seek out food, much of which needed to be stolen discretely.  --Amazon--

The place beyond the pines

The significance of a man's role in the family and in a marriage is heavily explored from start to finish. All the main characters appeared very raw and believable. The casting was expert and the complexities of each character were portrayed very subtly without the need for much dialogue, which is always the genius of a well-written movie. The sins of our fathers was a reoccuring theme throughout, and you can feel the inadequacies, hopes, and fears of each character as time unfolds. What gets me the most is witnessing the sweetness and kindness behind each character despite their depravity or past mistakes.    --Amazon--
